Even organizations that are well managed can be unexpectedly hit with water damage. The risk of water damage is always apparent for businesses located in low lying areas where flooding is common. A flood can destroy the premises, furniture and computer files. Failure to adequately recover from such a disaster could completely ruin your business. The repair of the premises and recovery of the business must begin in earnest as soon as possible. Delays will only increase the damage and may even lead to the structural integrity of the building being compromised.
Insurance Claim
In the United States, water damage is one of the most common reasons why people make insurance claims. Hopefully, you have had the foresight to purchase the requisite insurance as recovering from water damage is an expensive process. Report the damage to the insurance company immediately and they will send out an agent to inspect the business. You need photographic and preferably video evidence of the water damage. As soon as it is safe to do so, document the damage before beginning the process of removing the water from your building. Write down a list of things that have been damaged and include documents such as receipts of repairs, a complete water damage report and cost estimates in your correspondence with the insurance company.
Act Fast
Speed is off the essence when it comes to clearing the water. Some businesses may try and save money by clearing the place themselves but this is not a good idea. It is a huge amount of work and may involve shutting down electrical outlets. It can be a dangerous job so seek the help of professionals. Hopefully, your insurance company will have recommended a water damage cleanup company. The longer it takes to begin the cleaning process, the more damage that will be caused. Mold absolutely thrives in water damaged buildings because it loves excess moisture. It is possible to save furniture and carpets from water damage by using a dehumidifier to dry the items as soon as possible. Once dry, the items should be treated and cleaned thoroughly.
Data Recovery
Arguably the biggest problem water damaged businesses face is that of data recovery. Organizations that use online backup and have their files backed up in the cloud have little to worry about because it is easy to recover the data from the backup provider’s remote servers. Some companies use advanced techniques which may recover data from water damaged hard disk drives. It’s important not to try and recovery the data yourself as this could completely destroy the disk. Resist the temptation of drying the hard drive disk as this could contaminate the hard disk’s platter. Instead, keep the hard disk drive in a sealed container while it is still wet. This will prevent the disk drive from corroding and allow the data recovery team to retrieve your information.
As long as you have insurance and the means of recovering your vital data (if it has not already been backed up), your business can recover from fire damage relatively quickly. The important thing is to act fast for the sake of your company.

I definitely agree with you, Jason. Business and home owners should act fast whenever their properties are suffering from water damage. If your house or office has standing water inside, then don’t let it “stand” there and hope that it will dry out soon. You’re risking you and your family/employee’s health because mold will begin to thrive there.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Quick mitigation is the key to water damage. You can always reduce your losses by saving the assets that mean most to you and your business. By preventing water damage from reaching the valuable assets of your business, you help reduce the allocation needed for your business to recover completely.
ReplyDeleteFacility damage should really be acted upon as early as possible to keep the situation from getting worse. Like what was cited in the article, mold can begin to grown in just 12 to 48 hours. One of the initial steps you have to do is to keep the place dry and clean; you can use disinfectants and antibacterial chemicals for this. Next is containment-you prevent the infected areas from influencing the “healthy” ones. Mold can be prevented by applying bleach around it. For a surefire way of mold elimination, better get in touch with the professionals.

Well, the things mentioned above are a great help to anyone who needs it. It also shows just how important it is to respond quickly to water damage. There’s a loss to sales and production every time the business is interrupted, not to mention water damage to important office documents and equipment, so, if you really want to mitigate the damage and get your business back to its normal operations, you really need to act fast.
